If you want to get back into sport or add a little cardio to your workouts, think skipping rope! In its adult version, this childhood toy can be used to work on endurance. The heart and respiratory system are strongly solicited in this intense activity, which increases cardiac resistance and lung capacity. The venous return also increases, as the impulses on the ground stimulate the blood circulation.
Skipping also improves muscular endurance: the ability of the muscles to perform prolonged physical activity. From this point of view, this sport is ideal because almost all muscles are mobilised. In the upper body, arms, shoulders and pectorals are involved in the rotation of the rope. In the lower body, all muscles are used, from the feet to the buttocks. Not forgetting the abdominal muscles, which must be kept tight throughout the exercise.
The result? The entire body is toned and refined: thanks to the mobilisation of all the muscles, the energy expenditure is significant. According to the calculations of the Institute for Research on Wellness, Medicine and Sport Health, « a 70 kilo person who does 20 minutes of rope work will have spent 187 kcal if he or she uses a simple technique and if his or her experience is low. For beginners, training should start slowly and progressively because the demand on these muscles is so great that beginners are advised not to exceed five minutes in the first few sessions ». The most prudent thing to do if you want to resume physical activity is to talk to your doctor.
