For the good of both mother and child, the World
Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastfeeding for at least six months.
This is not an easy goal to achieve, but it is a legitimate one nonetheless.
According to a British and Chinese team, breastfeeding confers a certain degree
of protection against cardiovascular disease and stroke. The longer the mother
has breastfed, the greater the benefit.
The Journal of the American Heart Association shows that compared to women
who have never breastfed, those who have breastfed for any length of time have
a reduced risk of stroke and of suffering a cardiovascular event. Breastfeeding is associated with a reduction
in cardiac and cerebral risk of about 10%, with an increasing benefit for
long-term breastfeeding. At this stage, it is an association. Breastfeeding may
have a positive effect on postpartum metabolism, especially in relation to fat
stored during pregnancy.
