Maintaining a well-hydrated body means maintaining a healthy body and avoiding cardiovascular risks. Drinking enough water helps the heart function properly, affects mood, regulates body temperature and eliminates toxins from the body.  A study conducted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (USA), and presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress (ESC 2021), proved that good hydration has a positive influence on heart function and limits cardiovascular risks.

The findings of a study by the American Heart Association show that people who suffer from heart attacks are not used to drinking at least two litres of water a day. So the heart is suffocated and unable to supply blood to the lungs. Yet the heart is a pump that collects oxygen-depleted blood and pumps it back to the lungs to recharge with oxygen before it reaches the other organs. In dehydration, the blood is more viscous and the heart has to work harder to pump the blood. This can lead to fatigue or dysfunction in the heart and cardiovascular events.

The risk of a heart attack is particularly high in the morning because the body is dehydrated after a night's sleep. A study in the « American Journal of Medical Epidemiology » emphasises the importance of regular drinking, starting in the morning, to restore the blood to its normal consistency. After ingesting water, it is absorbed by the intestines and then enters the bloodstream. The water then mixes with the blood and dilutes the clotting factors. With less viscous blood, cardiovascular risks are limited.
