Staying
hydrated is one of the most important things in life. However, drinking water
with a meal causes certain abnormalities. So should you really refrain from
drinking during meals?
Water
is a necessary nutrient for health. That is why it is essential to drink enough
water. According to nutrition experts, this means 1.5 litres a day. It helps to
prevent certain illnesses such as headaches, lack of concentration, dry skin,
sore tendons or joints, or sometimes even irritability. But according to
experts, drinking water with meals is dangerous for the body. This is because
drinking while eating will dilute the gastric juices and hinder digestion.
Drinking water with meals should be avoided, especially if the meal is rich in
starchy foods or carbohydrates, as this can increase the glucose peak by up to
33%.
Why
not drink water with a meal?
During
digestion, the stomach secretes an acidic mixture that the enzymes need to
digest the food properly. This can cause bloating or swelling in the stomach.
The stomach adjusts its production of juices according to the amount of food
eaten and the consistency of the meal, in order to maintain the right level of
acidity. If there is more liquid, the stomach will simply secrete more. Since
when food reaches the mouth, it is coated and conforms to the temperature of
the stomach which is 37°C. So drinking
water with a meal reduces the temperature of the stomach and leads to poor
digestion. Thus, this can lead to thermal shock by forcing the stomach to
reboot.
In
addition, drinking while eating sugary foods can cause a blood sugar spike. As
blood sugar levels rise, insulin spikes are triggered and they will promote fat
storage in the cells. This is why sugary drinks such as soft drinks have a
negative impact on weight.
What
to do before and after a meal?
Experts recommend drinking water at least a
few minutes before or after a meal. Drinking two glasses of water between 15
and 30 minutes before each meal helps prepare the digestive mucosa for the
arrival of food. Drinking water before the meal will speed up digestion and
take only one hour to be absorbed by the vessels. Taking water before or after a meal is very
beneficial for the body and promotes regular transit of the stomach.
