The
circulation of fake medicines on the African continent is a concern for several
states. Togo wants to strengthen its pharmaceutical policy to fight against the
scourge. To do this, the country should soon ratify the treaty establishing the
African Drug Agency adopted on 11 February 2019 in Addis Ababa. On Monday, May
8, 2023, MPs unanimously voted for a vital health bill that will regulate the
drug sector.
The
Agency's mission is to implement a regulation of pharmaceutical products aimed
at pooling the resources and expertise of the African continent. This is to address
the lack of access to quality and affordable medical products, poor economic
development and the reduction of over-reliance on imported medical products. It
will combat the trafficking of fake medicines. Substandard and falsified
medicines are a public health problem.
The
Togolese government is taking a leading role in the fight against fake
medicines. In 2020, the Togolese capital hosted a summit on the phenomenon,
called the « Lomé Initiative ». The aim was to lay the foundations
for strengthening the regulation and enforcement of laws aimed at criminalising
the trafficking of counterfeit medicines. An African alliance was formed thanks
to the dynamism of the Brazzaville Foundation.
