Few people realise that between 75 and 80% of the body's mass is made up of water, which is fundamental to cerebral and circulatory health. When we don't ingest sufficient quantities of water, the body develops faults in its main systems and a series of negative health reactions can occur.

Sooner or later, certain symptoms indicative of dehydration appear, along with the harmful effects of the lack of water.

Dry mouth

A sticky, unpleasant sensation in the mouth is the result of reduced saliva production due to dehydration. Drinking water acts as a lubricant for the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, which is essential for keeping them healthy and warding off infection.

The sensation of thirst

Although it's very logical, the sensation of thirst is an obvious symptom of a lack of water. In particular, it's a symptom of a hangover, as alcoholic drinks dehydrate the whole body and lower energy levels.  The brain sends warning signals to get the fluids it needs to function optimally.

Dry eyes

Drinking water every day not only helps lubricate the mouth and throat, but also the eyes and other important parts of the body. Lack of fluid can reduce oxygenation capacity and dry out the tear ducts in the eyes.

Pain in the joints

The cartilage and spinal discs that protect the joints are made up of 80% water. Daily consumption of this fluid is therefore essential to prevent bone friction and joint damage. When the body is kept well hydrated, the joints are lubricated and ready to withstand the impact of daily movements. Water deficiency increases the risk of trauma, premature deterioration and chronic diseases such as arthritis.

Muscle mass is reduced

Muscles are also made up largely of water. This means that the less water there is in the body, the more muscle mass loses strength. Drinking water before, during and after exercise is essential to prevent dehydration and muscle shrinkage. This stimulates blood circulation and prevents damage to inflammatory processes caused by over-exertion.

Exposure to more diseases

Drinking water is an essential habit to encourage the body's depurative processes, which remove toxins. Without this liquid, the body's organs cannot function properly and the immune system is weakened. As a result, the body is more exposed to attacks from germs and other agents that cause serious illness.

Feeling tired

Water is essential for good blood circulation and optimal oxygenation of cells throughout the body. Dehydration not only affects the passage of blood through the arteries but also prevents the brain from being oxygenated. Lack of water leads to continuous episodes of fatigue, mental frailty and other related symptoms, which prevent the body from carrying out the activities planned for the day.

Digestive diseases

The digestive system suffers serious damage if it is not given enough water throughout the day. Water supports intestinal movements and is necessary for the normal evacuation of faeces. It serves to moisten the food ingested and thus facilitate the expulsion of waste that the body does not need. Lack of water causes the stomach lining to shrink, increasing the risk of acidity, reflux and gastritis. Water plays a vital role in the body's functions, and proper intake can help protect against many illnesses and maintain good health.
