Heavy drinkers include men who drink more than two glasses of alcohol a day and women who drink at least one every day and all adults who are prone to rapid and excessive drinking at least once a week.

According to researchers at the University of Chicago, among excessive drinkers, scientists have observed levels of nitric oxide in exhaled air lower than in individuals not drinking or occasionally. Nitric oxide is an important gas because it protects the body from certain bacteria, especially those responsible for respiratory infections. This can disrupt the lung balance of heavy alcohol users, making them more susceptible to infectious diseases.
