The health effects of excessive
alcohol consumption are known to the general public. However, what is less
known is that it can also increase the risk of lung infections. Researchers
have investigated its effects on the respiratory system. According to their
study, heavy drinkers are more likely to suffer from lung problems. Heavy
drinkers include men who drink more than two glasses of alcohol a day and women
who drink at least one every day and all adults who are prone to rapid and
excessive drinking at least once a week.
According to researchers at the
University of Chicago, among excessive drinkers, scientists have observed
levels of nitric oxide in exhaled air lower than in individuals not drinking or
occasionally. Nitric oxide is an important gas because it protects the body
from certain bacteria, especially those responsible for respiratory infections.
This can disrupt the lung balance of heavy alcohol users, making them more
susceptible to infectious diseases.
Excessive alcohol consumption
increases the risk of developing cancer of the liver, breast, esophagus or
mouth, not to mention various diseases of the body. According to the
researchers, this discovery requires further research to understand the complex
interactions between alcohol and nitric oxide in the respiratory tract.
However, heavy drinkers must change their behaviour.
