Hypertension is a condition that affects many people, and has a variety of causes. Certain plants are effective in preventing and countering hypertension. This is the case, for example, with hibiscus and bissap.  Studies have been conducted to prove the effectiveness of hibiscus as a natural treatment for high blood pressure. In 2013, a study of people with diabetes and hypertension who consumed 3 glasses of bissap a day showed a significant drop in blood pressure after 4 weeks. Another study showed that infusion of hibiscus sabdariffa could even be more effective than hydrochlorothiazide, a drug widely used to treat hypertension, but without any side effects. Hibiscus flower infusion also has a mild laxative action and is a cholagogue, meaning it helps the gall bladder to function better.

Recipe: 1.5l of water + 5 tablespoons of dried hibiscus flowers + 3 sprigs of fresh mint + ½ of a ginger root. Wash the flowers and place in a saucepan with the water and sliced ginger, then bring to the boil for 25 minutes. After 25 minutes, remove from the heat and add the mint leaves. Leave to cool completely. Pour the liquid through a sieve to separate the flowers from the juice. Add the sugar to the juice. Store the juice well.
