Palpitations
are sudden, perceptible heartbeats. They can be harmless or, on the contrary, a
sign of a more serious condition. Palpitations can have various origins and
correspond either to the heart adapting to a normal situation or to abnormal
heartbeats. Everyone has palpitations, it's perfectly normal. The older we get,
the more palpitations we have. When these contractions come closer together or
are felt more intensely, they are benign in 90% of cases. It's uncomfortable
but there is no risk to life.
Symptoms
Most
often, palpitations manifest themselves as a sensation of a heart beating very
fast or pounding in the chest. Sometimes, it is simply the unusual sensation of
feeling your heartbeat. The heart may race for no apparent reason and then
return to a normal rhythm just as quickly. In other cases, the sensation occurs
when the heartbeat is irregular. Palpitations are sometimes accompanied by
other symptoms: difficulty breathing, dizziness, anxiety, sweating, agitation,
etc.
Complications
Changes
in the frequency or regularity of the heartbeat can affect blood circulation,
causing you to faint, for example. This is why palpitations always require
medical consultation to identify the cause.
