Urine is produced by the body to eliminate waste products. During sleep, the body produces more concentrated urine and less of it than during the day. This is why you can go for hours at night without feeling the need to urinate. Getting up to urinate at night is normal. But what can be worrying is getting up several times a night to urinate: nocturia. This is a common disorder, often trivialised, which manifests itself as an urgent need to urinate more than twice a night. This sleep disturbance is distinct from enuresis and has a considerable impact on quality of life.

Nocturia may be linked to the natural ageing of the urinary system, but it may also reveal underlying health problems. Identifying the causes of these nocturnal awakenings is essential if we are to get back to restful sleep. Solutions exist to reduce the frequency of nocturnal urination and improve general well-being.

Possible causes

Nocturia is not just a nocturnal nuisance. It can reveal age-related physiological changes.Over time, the production of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), which regulates the concentration of urine, decreases, resulting in more urine being produced at night.

According to some studies, after the age of 70, it is estimated that a large proportion of men wake up at least once to urinate. However, other factors may also be involved.Taking diuretic drugs (drugs that make you urinate more), urinary tract infections, an overactive bladder, diabetes or an enlarged prostate in men can all lead to frequent waking at night.Excessive consumption of liquids before bedtime, particularly drinks containing caffeine or alcohol, can also aggravate the problem. Taking sugary drinks at bedtime can also aggravate the problem. It is therefore essential to consult a doctor to identify the exact cause of nocturia and put in place the appropriate treatment.

The consequences of disturbed sleep

Repeated waking at night has a significant impact on sleep quality and overall health.Daytime fatigue, mood disorders, difficulty concentrating and reduced work performance are common consequences.Nocturia is the main cause of sleep disturbance in the elderly. Patients aged 55 to 75 who consult a urologist report getting up at least twice a night to urinate, a proportion that rises to over 80% in cases of benign prostatic hypertrophy. It also increases the risk of nocturnal falls, fractures, cardiovascular problems and depression.Nocturia can also lead to metabolic disorders, as poor-quality sleep disrupts the secretion of hormones that regulate appetite.

Solutions for peaceful nights

The first step is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It is advisable to limit fluid consumption, particularly diuretic drinks, in the hours before bedtime.A light meal, taken at least three hours before bedtime, promotes better digestion and reduces the production of urine during the night.According to a study by researchers at Loyola University Chicago, regular physical activity helps you sleep more peacefully.

If you are taking medication and notice an increase in the number of times you wake up at night to urinate, it's important to talk to your GP.
