Pain during breastfeeding is relatively common. It doesn't necessarily mean you're ill. However, it can be a sign of certain conditions that are important to identify

Breastfeeding is a unique bonding moment between mother and baby. However, it can sometimes be accompanied by pain in the breasts, particularly in the first few weeks. If breast-feeding causes pain, it's important to understand the causes so you can act quickly to preserve both the comfort and effectiveness of breast-feeding.

Poor position or latch of the baby

If the baby doesn't latch on properly, this can cause pain. Consulting a midwife can help improve position and latch.

Cracked or chapped nipples

Cracked nipples can occur at the beginning of breastfeeding. Applying breast milk or shea butter can provide relief.

Breast engorgement

Breasts can become sore if too much milk builds up. Expressing a little milk by hand or with a breast pump can provide relief.

Infection (Mastitis)

If you have redness, a hard breast, fever, or severe pain, this may indicate a breast infection. Consult a doctor promptly in this case.

Breast Candidiasis

A fungal infection can cause nipple pain, sometimes accompanied by itching or a burning sensation.

What to do?

Correct the latch. Make sure the baby opens their mouth wide. Use hot or cold compresses to relieve pain. Consult a doctor if the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever or redness.
