Since
July 27, cases of typhoid fever have been reported in a household in Pimini,
affecting 11 people, four of whom have developed complications. These cases
were transferred to Kara University Hospital for surgery. Thère, sadly, one victim had died. The seven others
showing symptoms were kept at Kantè Community Hospital, while 10 other less
serious cases are under surveillance in the community.
The
delegation was accompanied by the governor of the Kara region, Brigadier
General Adjitowou Komlan, and the prefects of Kozah and Kéran. Also present
were university, regional, and prefectural health authorities, the UNIR-Kéran
coordinator, Deputy Outchantcha Awima Atoutè, and local officials.
The
mission took the opportunity to raise awareness among local populations about
the symptoms and various hygiene measures to be observed in order to break the
chain of transmission of this disease. That includes systematic hand washing with soap and water before and after meals, after using the toilet, and after visiting a sick person. Other precautionary measures include disinfecting hands after sneezing or blowing one's nose, after handling garbage, or after cleaning animal pens.
Minister
Tchin Darré reassured everyone that all cases referred to hospitals are
receiving free, optimal care. “I would like to emphasize that treatment is
currently provided free of charge, on the instructions of the President of the
Council,” he said. He expressed his gratitude to the healthcare staff for their
dedication and availability in providing rapid and effective care to patients.
Health
authorities have urged people to build and use latrines to prevent fecal-oral
diseases, which are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality,
especially among children under 5 years of age.
