The
National Center for Research and Care of Sickle Cell Patients (CNRSD) received
a significant donation of computer and biomedical equipment from the Pierre
Fabre Foundation on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 in Lomé. This equipment aims to
strengthen the care of sickle cell patients in Togo, particularly children
exposed to serious complications such as stroke.
In
Togo, recent data indicate that about 2% of the population is a carrier of
severe forms of the disease, while 16% carry the genes of haemoglobinopathies,
explaining the continuous increase in the number of patients followed at CNRSD.
Sickle-cell
anemia is a genetic disease related to a qualitative defect in hemoglobin, the
main protein of the red blood cell. Transmitted by both parents, it mainly
affects black populations and is the cause of numerous severe complications.
Sickle-cell anaemia is a source of many complications, including stroke in
children who suffer from it.
Faced
with this reality, it is necessary to modernize the support tools. "The
digitization of medical records and consultations now appears to be an
essential condition for effective appointment management, better exploitation
of data for research purposes and more rigorous care planning," explained
Dr. Magnang Hèzouwè, Director of the CNRSD.
Furthermore,
the improvement of the technical platform, particularly the laboratory, is
essential to ensure continuity and quality of care, especially during
hospitalizations related to complications of sickle cell disease.
The Hospital Establishment Project (PEH) of
CNRSD 2025-2029 identifies several priority needs, notably diagnostic equipment
and computer tools. «In response to the requests made by the Togolese
authorities and the management of the CNRSD, the Pierre Fabre Foundation has
proceeded, for the year 2025, to a donation worth 40,743 euros, or 26,725,656
FCFA.» , stressed Giscar Koffi Samboe, country coordinator of the Pierre Fabre
Foundation.
This
donation includes among others, an automaton of biochemistry, a transcranial
echodoppler, eight desktop computers. This equipment is mainly intended to
prevent strokes in children with sickle cell disease, to ensure the continuity
of biological analyses, to strengthen the digitization of medical records and
to initiate the implementation of a hospital information system adapted to
patient monitoring and research.
Dr
Magnang Hèzouwè expressed his gratitude to the Togolese authorities for their
constant support in the functioning of the CNRSD, as well as to the
associations, NGOs and partners involved in the fight against sickle cell
disease. He expressed his deep gratitude to the Pierre Fabre Foundation for
this gesture in favor of patients and the Togolese health system.
This
distribution of materials illustrates effective cooperation between public
actors and international partners, in the service of better management of
sickle cell disease in Togo, with the hope of sustainably reducing
complications and improving the quality of life of patients.
