Water is a colourless liquid composed of hydrogen and oxygen (H20). It is essential for life, although it does not provide any calories. Drinking adequate amounts of water, or staying hydrated, is the first rule of health and nutrition. The body can supposedly go weeks without food, but only a few days without water. This makes sense when you consider that the body is made up of about 60% water and that dehydration can have physical and mental consequences. It is important to stay hydrated. But what are the reasons for this?

Water is the most important component of the human body and is essential for good health. Drinking enough water, or staying hydrated, is the first rule of health and nutrition.

Improve memory and mood

Research has shown that even mild dehydration can impair memory and mood in everyone from children to the elderly. Hydration has an impact on the brain, as well as the body, and research has shown that even mild dehydration increases anxiety. Lack of water can also increase the risk of headaches or migraines in some people.

Helping to maintain weight

Thirst is often confused with a 'sugar craving'. The next time you have a craving for something sweet, try a glass of water first. Staying hydrated can also help maintain weight. Research has shown that drinking water before a meal can make you feel fuller and therefore promote weight loss by suppressing your appetite. Results have shown that this can lead to greater weight reduction and improved insulin resistance.

Improving sports performance

There has been a lot of research into the effects of hydration or dehydration in athletes. The results all point to the fact that dehydration affects not only athletic performance, but also physiological function.

Preventing constipation

Water helps to 'move things around' in the digestive system, so staying hydrated can help prevent constipation in children, adults and the elderly. Carbonated water is also said to be particularly beneficial.

Supporting urinary tract health

Poor hydration can increase the risk of developing or recurring kidney stones in some people. Studies have also shown that drinking adequate amounts of water can reduce the risk of bladder and urinary tract infections, including cystitis, in women.

How much water is recommended?

The exact nutritional composition of a glass of water depends on its source. Mineral water and spring water, which usually come from underground reservoirs and springs, can provide additional nutrients in the form of minerals like calcium and magnesium. Experts recommend that the average adult should consume 6-8 x 25cl glasses or cups of hydrating fluid each day. However, this can vary depending on age, gender and activity level. For example, you may need more water if you are exercising or if it is hot.
