Eucalyptus
is a tree widely used in traditional medicine for its virtues. Essential oil
extracted from eucalyptus leaves contains beneficial compounds such as
eucalyptol, a powerful antiseptic, as well as antioxidants and
anti-inflammatory properties.
Eucalyptus
has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, expectorant properties. It is used in cases of
bronchitis, rhino-pharyngitis or laryngitis to calm cough and fluidize
bronchial sputum. It can also be extremely effective in cases of colds, flu or
sinusitis, urinary tract infections or candidiasis (mycosis).
Inhaling
eucalyptus vapours helps clear blocked nasal passages, making breathing easier
and reducing congestion. Eucalyptol, the main active compound of eucalyptus
oil, has anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe inflammation of the
respiratory tract, thus relieving cough and throat irritation.
Some
scientific research suggests that eucalyptus may have antiviral properties that
can help fight the viruses responsible for the common cold. A study conducted
in Israel to study the effects of aromatic essential oils on patients with
upper respiratory tract infections demonstrated the efficacy of an essential
oil compound that included oils of two types of eucalyptus. Only 20 minutes
after administration, patients began to feel an improvement in their throat and
cough.
Recipe: Place 15 dried eucalyptus leaves in 1 litre
of water. Boil for about 20 minutes. Let stand and strain. Drink 1 cup, 3 times
a day (morning, noon, evening). Add
honey to soften the taste and soothe the throat.
