Certain vegetables can help to combat minor pregnancy ailments such as nausea or constipation, backache, anaemia, stress and moodiness. These include spinach, cabbage, parsley, peppers, carrots and lettuce.  The folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, contained in these vegetables plays an essential role in the development of the baby's nervous system. So, even before you're pregnant, you can choose the vegetables that contain the most folic acid.  Iron requirements are higher during pregnancy, and iron deficiency can lead to anaemia. Fortunately, nature has a way of doing things, and in response to reduced maternal reserves, intestinal iron absorption capacity increases. So now is the time to focus on vegetables that contain iron. This trace element is also found in dried fruit, such as cashew nuts and almonds. On the other hand: avoid drinking tea with meals, as it reduces the absorption of iron. Instead, enjoy plant foods rich in vitamin C, which can double or triple its absorption.

Vitamin C plays a vital role in boosting immunity and fighting infection. It is also a friend of iron and collagen, the substance that holds together the body's various tissues (skin, bones, placenta). A shortage of vitamin C can be avoided by sprinkling salads with aromatic herbs that are rich in it, such as parsley.

Muscle cramps in the legs are common during pregnancy, especially in the final months. A diet rich in magnesium can improve these discomforts and make up for the deficiency that is common during pregnancy.
