Every
day, the liver works tirelessly to detoxify the body, store energy and regulate
metabolism. But certain eating habits can weaken it. Among them, a drink
consumed in excess by many households: fruit juice.
According
to gastroenterologist and hepatologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi, even juices
"100% pure fruit" can weaken the liver. In question, fructose, a
sugar almost exclusively metabolized by this organ. When consumed in excess, it
causes fat accumulation in the liver, increasing the risk of non-alcoholic
fatty liver disease.
A
glass of 250 ml of orange juice contains about 25 g of sugar (or 5 pieces) for
less than 1 g of fiber, compared to only 12 g of sugar and 3 to 4 g of fiber
for a whole orange. Fiber slows down the absorption of sugar and protects the
liver from overwork.
Prioritize
whole fruits, rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals, and limit juice consumption
to one glass per day.
